Dame Eliza joined the Security Service in 1974 and over the course of her career worked to counter the full range of threats facing the UK. After promotion through a number of roles including Director of Irish Counter-Terrorism and Deputy Director General, she was appointed Director General in 2002, where she led an organisation growing by 10% each year to meet the threat posed by terrorism. Eliza was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 2005 Birthday Honours List.
